overheard

(one woman and her dog
this week, alison verity, financial analist with chase devere bank)

what is the name of your dog?
i don't own a dog
what breed of dog is it?
as i said, i don't actually own a dog
why do you prefer dogs to cats?
i think dogs have more warmth of personality but, to be honest, i don't have strong views either way
if you had to compare your dog to an actual human person, who would it be, and why?
i don't own a dog
what role does your dog fulfil in your life, both practically and emotionally?
i'm going to skip this question as it doesn't apply to me for fairly obvious reasons
what are the main difficulties you face in your working life?
the financial markets are notoriously volatile and working for a massive organization such as chase i would say that the principal challenge is to find a metodology that combines the stability and long term planning expected of such companies with the flexibility, decisiveness and speed of reaction needed to make any significant impact in the prevailing trading conditions
does your dog help you with that?
no, dogs have no understanding of the complex rules governing stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and i don't own a dog
what do your friends and family think of your dog?
not much
do you have any funny stories about your dog?
no

foolish love : rufus wainwright

i don't want to hold you and feel so helpless, / i don't want to smell you and lose my senses, / and smile in slow motion with eyes in love // i twist like a corkscrew, the sweetness rising / i drink from the bottle weeping / why won't you last? / why can't you last? // so i will walk without care, beat my snare, / look like a man who means business / go to all the poshest places with the familiar faces / terminate all sings of weakness / oh, all for the sake, all for the sake of a foolish love // i will take my coffee black, never snack, / hang with the wolves who are sheepish / flow through the veins of town, always frown, / me and my mistress the princess / oh, all for the sake, all for the sake of a foolish love, yeah yeah // so the day noah's ark floats down park, my eyes will be simply glazed over / or better yet i'll wear shades on sunless days, / and when the sun's out, i'll stay in and slumber / oh, all for the sake, all for the sake of a foolish love / for the sake, all for the sake of a foolish love // cos, i don't want to hold you and feel so helpless, / i don't want to smell you and lose my senses, / and smile in slow motion with eyes in love

[sort of new one] cowboy song : rufus wainwright

see one thousand eyes, forget the starry skies, leaving you / every sunny path, a bit of aftermath, leaving you / so could you kindly shut the door? / it's strange to think i needed air before // then shut down the world, and stay within four walls / please shut down the world, and stay within these four walls // just one look at you, i'm finished wanting to challenge god / so i made my heart a home of elements so strong, we'll never feel the cold / and if god should come to call, i'll leave the curtains drawn / won't make the slightest sound, 'til he's out of town / and our secret tune remains, and we're done failing death // then shut down the world, and stay within four walls / please shut down the world, and stay within these four walls / and stay within these four walls

the internet made easy
colin taylor presents a step-by-step guide to the internet for the inexperienced
this week : getting on the internet

you've probably heard a lot about the internet. it's everywhere. but what is it and how do i get to grips with it? just follow these easy steps.
one : get a pc
pc stands for plastic computer. without one you can't get on the internet. you can only pretend. a pc will cost between £800 and very much more, depending on how big it is. one that's just big enough to fit on your desk should be ideal.
see pannel for stockists
the pc
see illustration below left
comprises a keyboard, which is like a typewriter without paper,
a monitor, which is like a television without knobs or channels,
and a huge third component which is very heavy and gets hot with use. this is known in seattle, where computers come from, as the hhb, or hot heavy bit.
all three components are connected by wires known as cables. one of them comes with a fourth component called a mouse, which is so called because like a mouse it is a plastic hand-held-handle with a wire coming out the back.
two : get a modem
a modem is so called because it's modern and it works in tandem with your pc. many pc's will have a modem already installed. ask the sales assistant. if it doesn't have one installed, or if the sales assistant lied to you about it, you'll need to buy one, called a stand-alone modem. it is the size of a paperback book, depending on the size, but without pages. it also comes with wires known as cables, which plug into two of the other parts of the pc
see one
but not all. if all this talk of wires sounds daunting, don't be.
three : connect up to the internet
the internet, or world wide net web webspace, is already there. all you have to do is get on to it. it is called the internet because it is a net of computers which everyone is into. turn on your pc and your modem. a pannel should appear. ignore all the words on the pannel except 'on'. click on 'on'. a noise a bit like a fax machine will happen. another pannel should appear. if all this talk of icons and pannels appearing sounds daunting, there's no need.
four : connect up to an isp
an isp stands for internet sound picture. even if you have gotten on the internet, you haven't really unless you have an isp. you can get one of these in an instant of the internet, or failing that in more than an instant by phoning up
see pannel for isp hotlines
some isp's are free. others are more honest. when you have subscribed to an isp, an icon will appear on your screen bearing their logo depending on what it is. click on it, and wait
five : wait
the thing you will need to do the most on the internet is wait around. because it offers instant access to anything anywhere in the world straightaway, this can take up to ten minutes to download. although it's called downloading, your pc does not have to be positioned lower than the other pc. downloading can occur up or across, which is confusing. while it is downloading, you don't have to do anything. this is where the waiting around comes in handy. when the thing you wanted to see or read has downloaded down, up or across, you will be able to tell because it will be there. if it isn't, please try again later. shut down your pc, unplug it and turn off the electricity at the mains. put the individual components of the pc back in the box, with them hold in polystyrene pieces in correct formation. then, unpack them again, reassemble, reconnect the electricity and reboot. rebooting means turning on again, and not changing your shoes, which could cause problems later. now everything should work, as long as you have kept all the original packaging, which you should have really. happy cyber net web surfing.

incomes : £85,000 from simon's consultancy last year, and...oh about 10,000 or actually probably a lot more than that, 25,000 from charlotte's interior dress work, 40,000
combined total : £85,000
assets : £40,000 from a trust fund set up by simon's grandfather, and a knack for colours, because colours are really important
mortgage : £154,000, partly repayment, partly endowment, and partly just...you know, like a whole load of figures that don't mean anything
aims : increase pension provision for family protection and better conditions for farm animals, also tigers
the last year has been a busy year for simon and charlotte with the arrival of their daughter olivia, the arrival of a nanny, the conversion of the outbuildings from outbuildings to a space where charlotte feels grounded but also in a curious way set free both as a woman and a mother, and the departure of the nanny

[new one] patience is a virtue : rufus wainwright

patience is a virtue, i will name you after patience / wanting to be there, but being able to wait / patience is a baby that i'd really love to give you / so he can take care, 'stead of staying out late // i wake up in the morning, take my tea or coffee / look at the world out the window / listening to church bells / weddings, funerals / hell of a sound, want you around // could this be the answer, answer to all my confessions / are you the difference between glitter and tears / or is there still no reason and i am once more mistaken? / putting all my emotions into porcelain ears // i wake up in the morning, take my tea or coffee / look at the world out the window / listening to church bells / praying for you, down on my knees / what do i do? // patience is a virtue, i will name you after patience / patience is a baby that i'd really love to give you / blame it on black steeples and listening to church bells ringing / or watching the people passing me by / weddings and funerals passing me by

i'm just a boy of twenty-four, changing lives over the sea / ready to open up a new door, close my eyes, leave me be / i'm in this world of blacks and whites, just want to see in colour / in these dark and lonely nights, waiting on my lover // i'm just a boy of twenty-four, changing lives over the sea / ready to open up a new door, close my eyes, leave me be / see the animals jumping in their cages / wish i could be so free / but they are all locked up in their cages wishing they could be me // i've never died the way i died in your arms the night i cried / the night i cried in your arms, so hold me tight / right here in your arms tonight / i've never died the way i died in your arms the night i cried / the night i cried in your arms, so hold me tight / right here in your arms tonight // i'm just a boy of twenty-four, changing lives over the sea / ready to open up a new door, close my eyes, leave me be / i'm just a boy of twenty-four, changing lives over the sea / ready to open up a new door, close my eyes, leave me be

Onze horas da noite
uma rolha
um copo enche-se

CLOUDON
bebe do copo
Chamam-me mentiroso por isso
Eu
pessoa de sangue bom
fazedor e refazedor de nuvens
gente séria gente de bem
Sempre fui gente de bem
E então minto uma vez
inevitável impulso
obrigação quase
necessidade muscular
e é treta tudo o que digo
É treta
já me gritaram na rua
É insuportável maquinação tudo o que diz
E isso sim
isso sim
é falso e indigno
difamatório
e não o admito
bebe do copo
Metade das minhas verdades são mentira
até aí vou
daí não passo
bebe do copo
bebe do copo
Absolutamente
estamos de acordo
Será isso também o absurdo do vinho
Possivelmente
Não sei dizer
estou a bebê-lo
bebe do copo
isso não parece absurdo a mim
bebe do copo
inevitavelmente
um e o mesmo número
ou quanto muito dois números naturais seguidos
um e dois por exemplo
dezassete dezoito
eu e tu
bebe do copo
Eu e tu
E tudo entre nós
Estou a beber do vinho que me deste
Lembras-te
bebe do copo
Por acaso não é muito bom
Sabe
a quê
sabe a moscas
ou a lamber calhaus
Definitivamente é inferior
É um vinho inferior
Foi um vinho inferior que me deste
bebe do copo
Quere-lo
Eu não o quero
guarda-o
leva-o
quando cá vieres vens e leva-lo
eu não o quero aqui
bebe do copo
tomemos dezassete e dezoito
dois números suficientemente insuspeitos
sequenciais
inevitavelmente dezassete e dezoito
Um e um mais um
Um e eu mais tu etcetera
bebe do copo
Etcetera
Tristeza de vinho me deste tu
O que é complicado
é encontrar a tal raiz de constância
no meio de toda a interminável constelação de números
Números e fraccionamentos de números
e fraccionamentos de fraccionamentos de números
a aritmética bandalhice
que alguém um dia começou
e que nós tentamos acabar
Sem efeito
sem sucesso
Sem desistência
foi por isso que eu
numericamente imbecil
mentiroso
bebe do copo
nanossegundos e p á s resultados é como quem diz
é se quiserem treta neste caso
Porque meti-lhe os dados do meu problema
reenche o copo
bebe do copo

o mais complicado
julgo eu
Coisas estúpidas as máquinas
Perguntem-me quem foi
perguntem-me que outro alguém sabe fazer nuvens
E eu não sei
não sei responder
bebe do copo
bebe do copo
O trambolho continua calado
ri
E logo
calhar elevado a calhar
hipótese muito exponencialmente hipotética
E logo nós
bebe do copo
Merda para o vinho que me deste
leva-o
bebe do copo
como queríamos demonstrar
desenha desenhos no chão
como queríamos demonstrar
deixa cair o copo
parte-se

I feel anxious unless I speak to her on the phone every day, and then I feel anxious after we've spoken. Women who in the past demanded regular calls, telephoning back and forth like that, I'd invariably gotten rid of - and now it was I demanding it of her: the daily fix by phone. Why do I flatter her when we speak? Why don't I stop telling her how perfect she is? Why do I always feel I'm saying the wrong thing to this girl? I'm unable to make out what she makes of me, what she makes of anything, and my confusion causes me to say things that sound false or exaggerated to my ear, so I hang up full of silent resentment toward her. But when the rare day passes that I'm able to discipline myself enough not to speak to her, not to call her, not to flatter her, not to sound false, not to resent what she unknowingly does to me, it's worse. I can't stop doing anything I'm doing, and everything I'm doing leaves me upset.

rules and regulations : rufus wainwright

i will never be as cute as you / according to the board of human relations / i will never fly as high as you / according to the board of public citations / these are just the rules and regulations / of the birds and the bees / the earth and the trees / not to mention the gods / not to mention the gods // all my little life i wanted to roam / even if it was just inside my own home / then one little day i chanced to look back / saw you sitting there, the innocent culprit / these are just the rules and regulations / of the birds and the bees / the earth and the trees / not to mention the gods / not to mention the gods // these are just the rules and regulations / yes these are just the rules and regulations / and i like everyone / yes i like everyone / must follow them
